Jim Carrey Inspirational Commencement Address at the 2014 MUM

A World Starving For New Leadership

"You are the vanguard of knowledge and consciousness; a new wave in a vast ocean of possibilities. On the other side of that door, there is a world starving for new leadership, new ideas." - Jim Carrey

Our take: Despite what they may have told you, there is a challenge out there for younger generations to rise! You are part of this world and your ideas and creativity is needed. We get so much spoiled in this technological era, that we don't realize that it's up to us to built the next big thing also. We shouldn't rely solely on the great things, those things others in the past have already provided for us, they create something new. But now it's time to create other things that can change lives. We all have a bigger part to play, we must embrace it.

Love or Fear

"You can spend your whole life imagining ghosts, worrying about your pathway to the future, but all there will ever be is what’s happening here, and the decisions we make in this moment, which are based in either love or fear." - Jim Carrey

Our take: Great point and awesome advice. Imagine any life decision you make it's about this two choices, love or fear? Wouldn't that be simple? In fact, it's that simple! The problem is we don't see that way, we prefer to tell a story to ourselves, make non-sense remarks about the uncertain future. We do this all the time, so what it's crucial here is that we start to focus on what's here in the moment for you to decide. Don't focus on the hypothetical, focus on what's real, so that you are able to change  things by making a decision to change in the now.

Ask the Universe for it

"So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality. What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect, so we never dare to ask the universe for it. I’m saying, I’m the proof that you can ask the universe for it — please! And if it doesn't happen for you right away, it’s only because the universe is so busy fulfilling my order. It’s party size!" - Jim Carrey

Our take: Above we talked about focusing on what's real, not the stories your mind tells you. Those stories is just your fear talking, instead let your dreams guide your future related thoughts. Dream for the future, but focus on the present events so you can reach those dreams. Once you know what you want to achieve, you have to let the universe know about it! Because the "archer" has to know is target, or else, the "arrows" will miss it's mark. That's why you must ask for what you want. There is this magical effect, whenever you ask for what you want, you start acting differently, your decisions are much more goal oriented, and the universe also starts to conspire for you to be successful. Basically, when ask the universe, you are telling the "archer" where to hit, now "he knows" it's just a matter of time for him to hit it.

Do What You Love

"My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn’t believe that was possible for him, and so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant, and when I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job and our family had to do whatever we could to survive.  I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love." - Jim Carrey
Our take: Interesting story, and the story of so many people out there. We tend to look for that safe job, discarding our passion. But in today's constantly changing world what job is safe? What if that "safe" definition doesn't exist anymore, it's just an old concept that helped our grandfathers decades ago in a totally different economy? We need to get the actualization, we need to have a costume made plan for success in modern time. By going all in to a safe job, you might get fired like Jim's dad did, and so much for "security". So why not go all in doing what you love from the start? You might fail also, but if you are successful, there is no possible comparison with the joy, the fulfillment and the rewards you'll get by doing what you love.

Effect On Others

"I can tell you from experience, the effect you have on others is the most valuable currency there is." - Jim Carrey

Our take: What to have impact on people? Start to lead by example, because people will not respect just words, they will respect actions. But what kind of actions? Not self-centered actions, but the type of actions that makes their world better, make a difference in people's lives and your life will also change. Add value to others, and your own value will rise up.

Search for Identity

"...that’s when my search for identity deepened.
I wondered who I’d be without my fame. Who would I be if I said things that people didn’t want to hear, or if I defied their expectations of me?
...you guys are way ahead of the game. You already know who you are and that peace, that peace that we’re after, lies somewhere beyond personality, beyond the perception of others, beyond invention and disguise, even beyond effort itself." - Jim Carrey

Our take: Deep down, you know who you really are. Don't look for the outside to hear that answer, don't go for your ego to ear that answer also. Things are simple, and your mindset has to be simple also. Look at life from a different perspective. Imagine you are about to make a public statement and you think about all people's expectations on you, on what you are going to say, imagine if you forget the things you have to say, imagine you will say something that will make people laugh hysterically. You can imagine all this things and create your own expectations, but after all is said and done, the majority of those expectations aren't met. Even if you were great you'll never feel accomplished if you put to many things of for grabs. So keep it simple, no expectations, no falseness, no gimmicks, just you, plain and simple, that's your identity. You will enjoy life and live much better that's guaranteed.

Need For Acceptance?

"Your need for acceptance can make you invisible in this world. Don’t let anything stand in the way of the light that shines through this form. Risk being seen in all of your glory
(about the painting) It’s not big enough!  This painting is big for a reason. This painting is called “High Visibility.” It’s about picking up the light and daring to be seen." - Jim Carrey

Our take: If you need to be accepted by everyone you'll end up doing things just to impress others. Who does this do? Most people do this, so if you go trough this path also, you'll blend in easily with the crowd. So you can become invisible by doing what people want you to do, not what you want just, for the fact you want to be accepted. Don't let those outside pressures catch upon you, they kill your inner uniqueness and weaken your strength to be yourself. Instead, give the world the best version of you with no fear of not being accepted.

Conscious Choice In Life

"And when I say, “life doesn’t happen to you, it happens for you.” I really don’t know if that’s true. I’m just making a conscious choice to perceive challenges as something beneficial so that I can deal with them in the most productive way. You’ll come up with your own style, that’s part of the fun!" - Jim Carrey

Our take: The sense that life is not something arbitrary that depends on luck, things will happen for you in a tailored mode, like you never expected. What's important is that you make a conscious decision about what you want, go ahead face challenges as opportunities for you to grow and get better. That choice is yours, is made up by you for you, that's where your uniqueness comes into play and that is why is so important for success.

Nothing Bigger Than Yourself

"Like many of you, I was concerned about going out in the world and doing something bigger than myself, until someone smarter than myself made me realize that there is nothing bigger than myself!" - Jim Carrey

Our take: That's the whole game! You are the center piece of your life puzzle, without you nothing makes sense in your life. So this is quite a remarkable quote, nothing is bigger than yourself when it comes to reaching your dreams and goals. No goal or dreams is bigger than you, stay humble, work hard and approach big things with a big smile like your are big also, because you really are.

Choose Love

"You are ready and able to do beautiful things in this world and after you walk through those doors today, you will only ever have two choices: love or fear. Choose love, and don’t ever let fear turn you against your playful heart." - Jim Carrey

Our take: Again, love or fear. Jim Carrey chooses love. And you? Is this a hard choice? Common... of course many will say "easy said than done" but that's exactly why you must do it and not talk about it. Love can get you trough anything, fear can stop from making everything. If you want to be successful follow Jim Carrey's advice.
