Life is never going to be all rainbows and butterflies. You will experience curveballs and more than a few obstacles. That does not mean that life has to suck.

You can still be happy and live a full life.

"Believe you can, and you’re halfway there." - Teddy Roosevelt

I know that now, but for two-thirds of my life, all I knew was darkness.

Despite a childhood full of sunshine, beaches, laughter, and love, ‘doing what the grown-ups do’ got the best of me. But in the worst way, I developed the habit of drinking excessively at a very early age. I became an alcoholic and later a drug addict as well.

At first, it was just to be ‘cool’ or to feel more ‘mature’, but then the drugs and alcohol started taking a toll on my life. My addiction fueled behavior went from bad to worse. It became a case of the chicken or the egg.

Eventually I ended up in prison, where I attended AA and NA meetings as an excuse to get out of my cell. It turned out that those meetings actually work because, at the end of my sentence, I was determined to turn my life around.

Unfortunately, I tried to fast track my way to sobriety by immersing myself into my new job. As you may have guessed, I relapsed.

I went back to my lonely place but this time it was even darker. The guilt of knowing what the addiction was doing to me and everyone I loved while still being unable to stop driving me to attempted suicide. The days leading up to that were the most difficult. I felt that nothing would ever be okay, that I was just cursed or, at the very least, unlucky.

This time around, I went to rehab. It was there that I learned about the power of positivity.

Changing my perspective changed my life. In this article, I will be sharing the top 6 positive life habits that truly transformed the way I experience life. Hopefully, this will help some of you too.

6 Positive Life Habits That Improved My Life

1. Empower Yourself

Positive people do not let themselves feel like a victim of their circumstances. Your life is in your hands.

No matter what happens to you, you have complete control over how you can react.

As capable as you are, you should also know when to ask for help or guidance from people that are safe and care about what is best for your well being.

Positivity means having a healthy level of respect and compassion for yourself despite whatever mistakes you may have made in the past. Everyone deserves to be happy.

If you feel like you need a little extra push, here’s a little wisdom from someone who is known for being both positive and empowering.

2. Letting Go Is Different From Quitting

There are situations that are simply unmanageable, or unchangeable that you will be better off letting go of. This is not the same as quitting

Positivity awareness is knowing when something (or someone) gets to be too much to handle or just plain unhealthy for you and knowing when to walk away. This can be the case with a relationship (platonic or otherwise), a location, or even a way of life.

Going back to the first point, your life is in your hands. There is no point in exhausting yourself or making life more difficult for yourself for the sake of hanging onto something that no longer serves you. Let go and move on to something better.

3. Make Your Own Sunshine

Some days will be harder than others and that’s just a fact of life. Positive people don’t just sit around and wait for circumstances to change.

Positive people are proactive.

They get up and get involved in improving every facet of their lives so that every day is a good day, despite external circumstances.

For positive people, every cloud has a silver lining and every day has its own kind of sunshine.

4. No Looking Back

Featured in the article: "5 Positive Life Habits That Improved My Life". No looking back, girl, improved life, empowered by positive life habits

This was an especially tough one for me. It wasn’t easy to forgive myself for all that I had done in the past...

The guilt kept the old memories playing on a loop in my head like a broken record. This is what negative people do.

Whether the memories are good or bad, constantly reliving them either keeps you perpetually longing for old times or ridden with guilt. I needed to change that and that's exactly what I did!

Positive people are grateful for their past, but leave it where it belongs, in the past.

So I start to focus on making every moment a memorable one, it worked and it's still working!

5. You Are Full Of Possibilities

I spent a good chunk of my life focusing on my downfalls and limitations. That along with guilt were two of my biggest triggers

In rehab, I learned to make a list of all my good qualities.

I learned to shift my attention to all the things I am capable of, all the things that I like or admire about myself.

I also learned to always work on adding to the list by consistently improving myself mentally, emotionally, and physically.

A positive person is not only aware of their potential, they celebrate it.

While no one can handle everything or solve every problem, but just like every positive person, I do whatever I can do to the best with my abilities.

6. Creatures of Habit

If you look at your whole week, you’ll probably find that you tend to go through very similar motions on a daily basis. This is because, as humans, we are creatures of habit.

If you want to lead a positive life, it only makes sense that you practice positive habits.

I had to mindfully incorporate these habits and replace the old ones for the first month or so. Then before I knew it, they became no-brainers and my life became that much brighter

Don’t forget to smile often, laugh every day and love every moment.
