We all have that friend -- she wakes up every morning and hits the gym before work. She decides she wants to quit her office job and work for herself, and somehow, she does! She always seems to find the motivation to achieve her goals.

Meanwhile, we find ourselves pressing “snooze” all morning and letting procrastination dominate our days.

Is our friend just blessed with unflagging and intrinsic motivation to pursue her dreams? Does she have no outside pressure or strife that cause her to feel overwhelmed and push her goals aside?

Believe it or not, your friend likely deals with just as much turmoil in her life as the rest of us. She’s just figured out the secret to finding and maintaining motivation.

Not just getting motivated for a few hours, weeks, or days, but staying motivated long-term. When life seems exhausting, this can appear nearly impossible, but there are actually tried-and-true methods for finding and retaining motivation.

How can you be and stay motivated? What’s the secret to finding the motivation to accomplish what you want?

How to Be Motivated: Finding Inspiration For Your Road To Success

How to Be Motivated Tip #1: Clearly Envision Your Goal

Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, is one of the most influential thinkers on motivation and goal-achievement in the world. In Think and Grow Rich, Hill distills the lessons he learned from interviewing hundreds of the most successful people in the world to identify the secrets of their success.

Hill lists “Imagination” as one of the core tenets of getting motivated to achieve your goals.

As Hill explains, “If you do not see great riches in your imagination, you will never see them in your bank balance.”

You need to use your imagination and visualize exactly what you want, and how you will feel when you get it.

That’s the key to finding motivation. The Wealth Creation Mastermind (link in bio) notes in its summary of Think and Grow Rich that “the ability to use your imagination to see a picture in your mind of what you want starts the process of creation.”

It is only once you have this vision in mind that you can find the motivation long-term to accomplish your goal, put your intentions our into the universe, and keep that motivation steady.

How to Be Motivated Tip #2: Build a Burning Desire

How do you find motivation day-in and day-out?

Hill explains that you must have a burning desire for what it is you want: “There is one quality which one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it.”

Imagine how you will feel when you have what you desire. Practice seeing this in your mind when you are working yourself up to perform tasks that you don’t want to do.

Why do you want to accomplish X thing? Focus on your reasons and how X will improve your life.

Go back to your journal where you’ve written down your goal, and focus on it. Write down everything it is about this goal that fuels you. Set your intentions clearly on achieving it, and meditate on those intentions daily.

It is only then that the desire you have built can propel you through times when your motivation starts to wane.

This is important because finding motivation is easy--when you’re feeling great.

The secret to success is finding motivation when all you want to do is hit the snooze button.

Do you think your friend wakes up every single morning wanting to go to the gym? She probably doesn’t.

But her burning desire of being fit and healthy propels her past her sticking points, and before she knows it, she’s completed another workout and feels great.

She finds motivation even when she’s having an off day.

How to Be Motivated Tip #3: Plan

Drive is nothing without action.

In a study on long-term motivation, Professor Thomas Bateman of the University of Virginia established a list of self-regulation strategies, the first of which is developing a goal portfolio.

He recommends that you, “have a clearly defined set of goals that includes a mix of short- and long-term goals.”

Create to-do lists for short-term goals, but always recognize what longer-term goal you’re working towards.

It's easy to procrastinate on a huge task, so breaking that task down into small tasks makes it easier to accomplish. It's also easier to see progress when you break big tasks down into small ones. Journeys are made of small steps

And write all of this down! Nothing feels better than checking something off of a physical to-do list, so let that fuel you when the minutiae seem overwhelming. Nothing boosts motivation like taking another step in your journey.

To find motivation consistently, document how you are getting closer to your goal.

How to Be Motivated Tip #4: Find Like-minded People

Featured in the article: "How To Be Motivated: Finding Inspiration For Your Road To Success". Like-minded People, hands, successful

How can you get motivated when you’re surrounded by people who do not support you? It’s very difficult to find motivation in that scenario, because we end up the average of the 5 people we’re closest to. What’s easier than trying to retain motivation when no-one supports you is to consciously surround yourself with people who do

If you’re wondering how to be motivated, this might be one of the most important things you can do.

I’m sure you have friends who can easily talk you into or out of anything. Unfortunately, a lot of the time, when we’re looking to change our lives, those people are part of what holds us back.

If you find that your friends are pressuring you to hit the bars and drink when you want to stay home and work on a passion project, or need to wake up early the next morning to get your day started correctly, you may need to find friends and associates who are more aligned with your current way of thinking.

How to Be Motivated Long-Term

If you have established your clear goal and have a true burning desire to achieve it, you’ll be pleasantly surprised that maintaining your motivation is much easier than you’re used to.

That said, everyone hits slumps, and it’s important to know how to keep going when the going gets rough.

Adjust Your Plan

Plans are made to be adjusted. While it’s important to make a plan before you begin, it is also key that we continue to course-correct when things go wrong.

Think of your goal like a science experiment...

If something doesn’t go the way you expect, don’t just keep repeating the same thing over and over again. Adjust and make something different, try it again.

As the old adage goes, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results.

Of course, you can’t expect to succeed at everything you do 100% of the time, but if you’re noticing a persistent problem, learn from it!

Failure is not the end, it is simply the sign that you’re at a fork in the road and it’s time to make some new choices.

How Can You Be Motivated Through a Slump?

When you’re stuck in a slump, negative thoughts and lack of motivation pervade. The most important thing to realize is that everyone has been there--including all of your heroes and mentors.

Understanding this helps you to see that slumps are temporary and can be overcome.

From there, try cultivating a gratitude practice. In a slump, it’s easy to only see the bad; but by consciously identifying things in your life that you’re grateful for, you can pull out of the slump more rapidly.

You can also try changing something big in your life, like moving to a new city or changing when you wake up each morning; in order to shock your system and break out of your rut.

Keep Going!

You are as powerful as you believe yourself to be. Follow these steps when setting your goals and working to achieve them, and allow yourself to truly go for what it is you desire.

Motivation goes hand-in-hand with self belief, and if you have a great plan and believe in it, you can overcome any hurdles you come across.

We hope now you're ready to be motivated and start your journey on the road to success.
