Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, is one of the most influential thinkers on motivation and goal-achievement in the world. In Think and Grow Rich, Hill distills the lessons he learned from interviewing hundreds of the most successful people in the world to identify the secrets of their success.

Hill lists “Imagination” as one of the core tenets of getting motivated to achieve your goals. 

As Hill explains, “If you do not see great riches in your imagination, you will never see them in your bank balance.”

You need to use your imagination and visualize exactly what you want, and how you will feel when you get it.

It is only once you have this vision in mind that you can find the motivation long-term to accomplish your goal, put your intentions our into the universe, and keep that motivation steady.

How to Be Motivated Tip #2: Build a Burning Desire

How do you find motivation day-in and day-out?

Hill explains that you must have a burning desire for what it is you want: “There is one quality which one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it.” 

Imagine how you will feel when you have what you desire. Practice seeing this in your mind when you are working yourself up to perform tasks that you don’t want to do.

Why do you want to accomplish X thing? Focus on your reasons and how X will improve your life.

Go back to your journal where you’ve written down your goal, and focus on it. Write down everything it is about this goal that fuels you. Set your intentions clearly on achieving it, and meditate on those intentions daily.

It is only then that the desire you have built can propel you through times when your motivation starts to wane.

This is important because finding motivation is easy--when you’re feeling great.

The secret to success is finding motivation when all you want to do is hit the snooze button.

Do you think your friend wakes up every single morning wanting to go to the gym? She probably doesn’t.

In a study on long-term motivation, Professor Thomas Bateman of the University of Virginia established a list of self-regulation strategies, the first of which is developing a goal portfolio.

He recommends that you, “have a clearly defined set of goals that includes a mix of short- and long-term goals.”

Create to-do lists for short-term goals, but always recognize what longer-term goal you’re working towards. 

It's easy to procrastinate on a huge task, so breaking that task down into small tasks makes it easier to accomplish. It's also easier to see progress when you break big tasks down into small ones. Journeys are made of small steps

And write all of this down! Nothing feels better than checking something off of a physical to-do list, so let that fuel you when the minutiae seem overwhelming. Nothing boosts motivation like taking another step in your journey.

As the old adage goes, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results.

Of course, you can’t expect to succeed at everything you do 100% of the time, but if you’re noticing a persistent problem, learn from it!

How Can You Be Motivated Through a Slump?


When you’re stuck in a slump, negative thoughts and lack of motivation pervade. The most important thing to realize is that everyone has been there--including all of your heroes and mentors.

Understanding this helps you to see that slumps are temporary and can be overcome.

From there, try cultivating a gratitude practice. In a slump, it’s easy to only see the bad; but by consciously identifying things in your life that you’re grateful for, you can pull out of the slump more rapidly.

You can also try changing something big in your life, like moving to a new city or changing when you wake up each morning; in order to shock your system and break out of your rut.
